When is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

While we strive to preserve your natural teeth, there are instances where tooth extraction becomes the best course of action. Common reasons for extracting a tooth include:

  • Severe gum disease: When gum disease progresses to advanced stages, it can affect the supporting bone structure. This can cause teeth to become loose and unsupported in the jaw. Depending on the quality of the remaining supporting structures, the affected mobile tooth may need to be extracted.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth that are misaligned or unable to fully erupt can cause pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth.
  • Severe tooth decay: Extensive tooth decay that cannot be restored with fillings may require extraction.
  • Tooth infection: A tooth infection that doesn’t respond to root canal treatment might necessitate extraction.
  • Trauma: A severely broken or fractured tooth may be beyond repair and require extraction.
  • Orthodontic treatment: In some cases, teeth may need to be extracted to create space for teeth alignment.

What to Expect During and After a Tooth Extraction

The complexity of a dental surgery involving tooth extraction varies depending on the tooth’s location, condition and proximity to the sinus and nerve. Our dentists will carefully assess your situation by use of radiographs (xrays) and recommend the appropriate procedure based on your needs. Our main priority during a tooth extraction is making you comfortable for the procedure. Pain management during the surgery will be discussed in advance and may included the following:

  • Local anesthesia:  Extractions are performed using local anesthetic to numb the area, minimizing discomfort.
  • Sedation: For more complex cases or patients with dental anxiety, sedation options such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or an oral sedative may be available.

After the extraction, you can expect some swelling, pain, and bleeding. We will provide you with post-operative instructions to help manage discomfort and promote healing.

Post-Extraction Care

Following your tooth extraction, it’s essential to adhere to proper aftercare to ensure a smooth recovery. Here are some tips:

  • Rest: Avoid strenuous activities for the first few days. No lifting heavy objects for 48 hours
  • Cold compress: Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.
  • Soft foods: Stick to soft foods to avoid irritating the extraction site.
  • Avoid activities requiring suction. No smoking or use of a straw to drink.  o not rinse and forcefully spit out. These activities can cause dry socket.
  • Oral hygiene: Gently brush and floss the teeth around the extraction site, avoiding the area directly.
  • Medication: Take prescribed or over the counter pain relievers as directed.
