Prevent cavities and tooth decay with proper oral hygiene
Rainbow Dental Centre in Angus, Ontario offers prevention and treatment for cavities and tooth decay
Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are one of the world’s most common health problems. Cavities are holes or gaps in the hard surface of your teeth. They are caused by bacteria, sugary drinks or acidic food, and sometimes by inadequate brushing which leaves bacteria on the teeth. The byproduct of the bacteria in plaque wears away at the enamel surface of the teeth eventually causing cavities. Without treatment, cavities grow larger and affect further layers of your teeth, resulting in infections, abscesses, toothaches or even tooth loss. Because we don’t always know when a cavity is forming, it is important to pay attention to signs and symptoms such as increased sensitivity to cold and to sweets, pits or holes in the teeth and new areas of discolouration. Every morning and night you should give your teeth a good brushing and floss to help prevent tooth decay. Brush with fluoride toothpaste after drinking or eating, and use an alcohol free mouthrinse. Try to avoid sugary and acidic foods and beverages and avoid frequent snacking and sipping. Additionally, you should schedule regular dental check ups including digital dental x-rays for cleaning and identification of oral problems and preventive measures such as a professional fluoride application. Treatment of cavities include fillings, crowns, root canals, or even tooth extractions if your tooth is severely decayed.
